About
Hello and welcome to DomesticJoy.com.au!
This is a place for all things domestic – like recipes (actually especially recipes – I LOVE my food!), house keeping and menu planning tips and other domestic life lessons.
Work, and the need to earn an income, has too often taken first priority for me with most things domestic taking a backseat. We’ll just get takeaway this one time turns into most nights in a month. Leaving the corridor to be vacuumed for another week turns into not vacuuming it for weeks and weeks.
It’s too easy to overlook the significant impact of a comfortable home environment or a lack of one has to our general wellbeing – until, of course, it’s such a mess that it is no longer possible to function. Then there’s a big clean and things are livable again… for a while. Because most things domestic are still seen as a chore and avoided for as long as possible, the cycle continues.
Which brings me to the title of this blog, Domestic Joy. Well, much as I love the idea of constant domestic bliss, I don’t think it’s very achievable. On the other hand, moments of domestic joy are far more easily found and sustainable. With the right system and a bit of planning, most chores don’t have to be so painful and can sometimes even become fun. That’s the theory I’m testing anyway!
I have a little bit of motivation in that I only recently got married and while I admit that there’s a small desire to be a perfect 1950’s housewife (at least for the dresses), most of it is purely selfish. I function so much better when I’m in a clean house and when I’m eating regular healthy meals (duh huh?). I also work from home so I have even more reason to make my domestic life nice because I’m there a whole lot of the time.
So in my pursuit of domestic joy, I’ve decided to try to focus on improving aspects of my domestic life one step at a time. It’s not going to happen overnight!
Keeping a blog keeps me accountable and also gives me a place to document what I learn and what I might develop. Another brilliant thing about blogs is they also open the door to getting feedback and advice from others down the track so please feel free to comment, agree, disagree and give your own suggestions on the best way to do things.
Yours domestically,
Catherine
